Welcome to my house in T i m b u k t u !
Hamada "Rasta" and Mohamed "Touareg", my two friends from my first visit to Timbuktu in 2002, were happy to see me and suggested to turn the house into a hotel.
"Why not?!" I said.

It was love at first sight when I saw this building made of mud at the outskirts of Timbuktu, or Tombouctou, as the local people call it.
A contract was signed at the Mayor's office...

When visiting Mali, it is a must to see Timbuktu, or Tombouctou, as it is called by its inhabitants.
How to get there:
- By air from Bamako via Mopti, once or twice a week
- By bus (24 hours) from Bamako, once a week
- By 4 x 4 from Mopti next to the Gare Routiere, daily
- By 4 x 4 from Gao with Arab traders (inquire at the
Hotel Atlantide)
...and the work began:
windows and doors were installed where there were none before.
A room with a stinking hole in the ground was turned into a modern bathroom.
Younis and friend were helping, too......!
...... the new bathroom was tested extensively
by Younis.....
After a hard day's work it felt good
to relax the Touareg way.
When the sun went down, Mohamed showed us La Danse Touareg at the Restaurant (Disco!) AMANAR.
Monument (Flamme) de la Paix
Peace Monument (Flame)
Restaurant (Disco) AMANAR - top and below
How to find the Hotel Camping Touareg:
When leaving the Restaurant Amanar, you face
the Peace Monument. Take the street exactly to
the left of the monument for one block, turn
right and you have reached the hotel (below).
There is one more possibility I don't want to keep from you, but you probably would not..............or would you?
How to get to Timbuktu:
- By plane several times a week from Bamako via Mopti
- By bus from the bus station of Binke Transport, Bamako, twice a week (24 hours!). Daily buses to Mopti, from there:
- By minibus or 4x4 next to the Gare Routiere near the "Campement" in Mopti
- From Gao: with Arab merchants - inquire at the Hotel Atlantide - or by bus to Douentza, from there by minibus or 4x4
If you have to stay one night in Douentza, you may stay at
"Le Phare Vert" camping right behind the "Express" restaurant next to the bus stop.
- If you are in Niamey, Niger, there is a bus going to Gao twice a week, from there as described above.
Please check your travel guide book because these options might have changed since the time of posting.
Tourists flock to Zagora (South-Morocco) just to take a picture of the most photographed street sign in the world (above) which reads in Arabic and French:
Just thought you should know.....
"52 days to Timbuktu"
